March 22, 1962 - Ryan Cowboys Basketball Team – Regional Champions. 

The Ryan Cowboys mowed down all opposition through district and regional tournaments this year.  They were defeated in the state tournament by Kaw City by a 38 to 48 score.  Their season’s record was 24 games won and 5 lost.  Team members and coach include:  Ronnie Wright, Butch Hoffman, Coach Raymon West, Larry Burden, John Stephen Overstreet, Sammy Overstreet, Dougy Cathey, Ikie Allen, Tommy Johnson, Charlie Jones, Mike Gilchrist, Weldon Roberson, Terry Johnson, and Cal Major.  Allen, Major, Gilchrist, Sammy Overstreet and Roberson will graduate this spring.

Ryan Contestants Score in District – Music Awards - Ryan’s list of music awards winners at the district meeting held in Lawton, March 15, sounds like Who’s Who in Music in Oklahoma, according to information given The Leader this week by Timothy Danielson, Music instructor in the local schools. Those scoring superior which is the top grade were:

Allen Keller was elected to the board of education this time without opposition.  The board members are Keller, Bob Givens, Arthur Johnson, Cliff Hager and Jug Benton. 

April 12, 1962 - Seniors to Present Their Class Play

A 3-act comedy-drama presenting sketches of the life of Christ will be given as the senior play this year….April 20, at 7:30 in the high school auditorium.  ….. Characters in the play are:  Howard Davis, Jeanne Neff, Sarah Garrison, Cal Major, Sammy Overstreet, Isaac Allen, Diane Allen, Dianna Burden, Weldon Robinson, Jerry Poage, Junnie Vaughn, Cherry West, Shanny Jelly, Jimmy Thorn, Judy Cephus, Mike Gilchrist and Connie Montgomery.


February 13, 1964 - Ryan Wins Three

Ryan swept a basketball triple header from Ringling Tuesday night on the home court.  The Junior High girls began the evening with an easy 46-30 victory.  Ryan displayed a well-balanced attack that saw Gayle Ellis score 19 points, Pernell Howard 15, and Sandy Knowles 12.  This victory made the girls record 4-2.

The high school girls scored their third victory of the season over Ringling by a 34-30 count.  This victory was not as easy as the first two, but the cowgirls did not play as well as usual.  Kafer led the scoring with 19 points, while Denning hit 8 and Huff 5.

The Cowboys finished the evening with a 53-34 victory.  James Montgomery, subbing for the injured Ronnie Wright, played his best game of the season as he grabbed 16 rebounds and scored 8 points.  Charlie Jones led the scoring with 23 points and Tommy Johnson hit 16.

April 8, 1965 - School Kiddies Here Hold Track Meet

Ryan’s future athletes – students from the first six grades – competed in the annual track meet held here April 1.  Coach Raymon West and James Perry supervised the meet, assisted by Don Seay, Floyd Park and P.D. Reynolds.

The Mr. Athlete title went to Mike Ewing and Lez Arizola, who copped 15 points each to tie for first place in boys’ competition.

Donna Tindol blazed a path to capture the title, Miss Athlete, by garnering 15 points in the round of events.

First grade winners – Mike Ewing, Ken Seay, Chuck Miller, Kyle West, Michael Griego and Barry George.

Second grade winners – Donna Tindol, Lynn Denning, Jenny White, Robbie Givens, Willie Ruiz and Diane Huff.

Third grade winners – Bennie Lee, Jim Seay, Phil Hooker, Rick Tallon, Bobby Williams, Lynn Underwood, Viniare Griego and Randy Williams.

December 3, 1964 - Music Program Slated Dec. 17

Mrs. Gayno Shelton, Music instructor in the school system here will present her students in a musical program at 7:30 p.m. December 17 in the school auditorium. ….Mrs. Shelton …. will present the junior high girls in 3 vocal numbers, the high school girls in 3 numbers and the boys chorus composed of junior high and high school students have prepared 4 songs for the public.

Other performances will be by the high school mixed chorus; and the four soloists for the evening are Lynda Johnson, Cindy Harris, Cindy Knowles and Furman Clark.  Piano accompanists will be Inez Shoffner and Rita Davis.  A total of 105 pupils are scheduled to appear on the program.


April 20, 1967 - Athletic Awards Given Tuesday

Awards were presented to Ryan’s outstanding high school athletes at the all-sports dinner Tuesday evening in Wichita Falls.   Coach Jerry Craig awarded football trophies to Randy Givens, Outstanding Back, and Eddie Pewitt, Outstanding Lineman.  Recognition was also given T.A. Poage and Furman Clark who were selected on the all-conference team.

Coach Richard Hendricks presented the Most Valuable Player trophies in basketball.  Pernell  Howard, all-state guard for the Cowgirls, and Eddie Pewitt of the Cowboy squad were recipients.  Leading Scorer trophies went to Gale Ellis and T. A. Poage.  Pernell Howard and Eddie Pewitt received the Leading Rebounder trophies.  Patch awards went to Carolyn Richardson, Jennifer Wright and Eddie Pewitt in recognition of being chosen on the all-conference squad.  Those making Honorable Mention were Sandy Knowles, Gale Ellis and T. A. Poage.  Special guests at the dinner were Don Luke, sports writer for the Lawton Morning Press and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Givens of Ryan.

Local Beta Club To Attend Event

For the first time since its organization here, the Ryan school Beta Club will have an opportunity to attend the state convention Friday and Saturday in Oklahoma City.  Mrs. Perry Jones, club sponsor , said members worked at various part-time jobs the past few weeks to raise funds to finance the trip.  They will be quartered at the Huckins Hotel.  Mrs. Jones said that to be eligible for membership a high school student must maintain at least a “B” average and possess the qualities of leadership, character, and achievement.   ….

Abby Shoffner and Pernell Howard of Ryan will serve as Marshals at the Saturday morning session.  Local officers are Lynda Johnson, president; Tony Warner, vice president; and Pernell Howard, secretary.  Members include Sandy Knowles, Lana Benton and Homer Ann Vaughn.  The three new members who were initiated into the club April 11 at a special dinner and meeting in the home of Mrs. Jones were Susan Park, Rita Davis and Mike Keller.
