April 8, 1954 - SCHOOL NEWS

First Grade - Two groups finished their readers and had seven perfect readers.  They are Mary Faye, Raetta, Inez, Mike, Dianna, Shenista and Myra.  We have been enjoying the stories in Diane Bruce’s big story book; We have been working hard on our writing, some are making improvement.    We surely did enjoy our train ride and everything the Duncan Chamber of Commerce had planned for us.  Thanks to Mr. Muncy for making arrangements for the train ride.  We appreciate our good bus drivers, Horance York and C.L. Boyd.  Also, Mrs. Coats, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Porterfield, Mr. P. I. Ryan, Allen Keller and Rev. Harold Honnold for taking cars for transportation.

Second Grade - The most important thing that has happened to the second grade this week is our train ride and picnic we had on April Fool’s Day.   We wish to thank all who helped make it a very pleasant day and one we won’t soon forget.  We have taken six weeks tests this week.  Are looking forward to getting our report cards on Wednesday.  The redbirds have finished their reader “Around the Corner” and have been given new readers.  The redbirds are Kay, Patricia G., Charley, Patsy M., Sharon, Carolyn, John, Joe, Judy and Teddy.

Third Grade - Once more we are back to studying and classes after a very nice and pleasant train trip to Duncan Thursday.  We left the school at 9 a.m. and went to the train on the buses.  There we boarded the train to Duncan, arriving there at 10:30.  There we were met by the Duncan police, who were our escorts for the day.  The first visit on our tour was to the bakery where we all received a donut, and our second stop was at Anthony’s where we rode the escalator.  We then were taken to the Duncan park by the Duncan school buses, where we had a picnic lunch.  After eating our lunches the children played.  Then we went to the airport to see a plane land and take off.  From there we went to Duncan’s new school.  Then we started home arriving in Ryan at 4:00.  All enjoyed the trip.

Fourth Grade - The fourth grade’s most interesting happening for this week was their train trip to Duncan.  We surely appreciate Mr. Kimberling and Mr. Whisenhunt for making it possible for us to go.  We had a wonderful time.  This weather is beginning to be spring and the fourth grade enjoys their ball playing and jumping the rope.

Fifth Grade - The fifth grade celebrated April first by going on a hike to Rocky Bluff.  We enjoyed walking on the swinging bridge and taking pictures.  We were a tired and hungry group when we arrived back at lunch.  Those in the fifth grade who went were Andy Kimberling, Robert Whitener, Betty Perry, Henry Williams, Waynel Walling, Carrel Smith, Teddy Boyd, Janey Cephus, Sue Palmer, Cora Carrel, Wayne Etheridge, Paula Ryan, George Davis and Jimmy Beavers.

Sixth Grade - We enjoyed “Hobo Day” on April 1.  Clever costumes were worn by each one and a “hand-out” lunch was enjoyed at noon.  We enjoyed the ball games in the afternoon.  The Easter frieze on our blackboard makes our room quite colorful.  Various ones in our class have contributed to this work.  Our class is enjoying a silent reading class which we have worked into our busy schedule recently.  Some have already read four of five readers.  Carolyn Morse, Kay Alford, Marcheta Gilchrist, Sandra Davis, Jean Shoffner, Tony Moss and Si Cain were chosen to represent our age group in track in Addington April 15.  They had a good time and did well.

January 19, 1956 - RYAN GRADE SCHOOL BUILDING DESTROYED BY FIRE MONDAY NIGHT

A fire of uncertain origin completely destroyed the Ryan grade school building Monday night.  The fire started about 6 o’clock, and was brought under control shortly after 7 o’clock.  The fire started in a grade room just above the boiler room.  It had spread and was out of control when Sup’t Lester Sexton and people in that part of town saw the flames.

In addition to the building, all free textbooks used by grades 1-8 were burned, as were the band suits, rhythm band suits, the furniture, library books, science equipment, all history equipment, and other equipment.  The grade school building was used as a storage place for most all school equipment.

The building was a 2-story structure built in 1908 and contained 12 rooms, 8 downstairs and 4 upstairs.  Its loss, together with the equipment, is estimated at $150,000.  The building also was used for high school classes, 9 classes in all, 3 math classes, 2 science, 2 history and 2 leathercraft.

Four fire fighting units were here to keep the fire under control, the one from Ryan, Waurika, Bowie, and Wichita Falls, Texas.  Nocona and Duncan departments were standing by to help keep the fire under control.  The flames leaped a hundred feet or more into the air, and threatened the school gymnasium and residences near by.  The W. L. Givens home just west of the school ground had its roof to catch fire three different times.  But quick work by the fire units prevented damage.

October 30, 1958 - Homecoming To Be Friday of This Week

Ryan will play host to many former graduates of Ryan high school Friday of this week, according to Bob Givens, president of the Alumni Association.  They will be returning to their alma mater from the west coast to the far reaches of Texas to the swishing Atlantic Ocean on the east.

Among a few of the many letters received is a part of this one by A. F. Hughes, Kermit, Texas, which says, “I am looking forward to attending this homecoming and a visit with all of my friends.”

Mr. and Mrs. Jim Harris of Dallas write, “We received your letter and we’re most happy to send our reservations.  We missed the big event last year, but will try in every way to be there this fall.”

And from Sioux City, Iowa, comes this note, “If possible, I would like to attend the mixer and game.”  This note is by R. Wilton, class of 1915.

And so on it goes.  About 200 from other places are expected to be here for the banquet at 6:30 p.m., Friday night, and the mixer following the football game between the Cowboys and Lone Grove.

Sandwiches, doughnuts, and coffee will be served at the mixer.

Numerous letters have been received enclosing alumni dues by those who cannot attend the homecoming.  Among the many letters is part of a letter from Tulley E. Brown, vice president and manager of the Bank of America, Los Angeles, California, which says,

“Your letter came while I was in Oklahoma City visiting my mother and had I known about the forthcoming event sooner, I could have possibly postponed my visit to coincide.

“Please extend my very best wishes to my old friends there particularly the Senior Class of 1918.

“I recall, with a great deal of pleasure, some of the wonderful times I had there as a small boy and I shall always have a warm spot in my heart for my old friends at Ryan.”

This is the third year the Alumni Association has had a Homecoming and it gets bigger and more popular each year.

Officers of the Association are Bob Givens, president; Mart Grantham, vice president and Alma Lewis, secretary.  To Mrs. Lewis goes most of the credit for the correspondence that has made the Homecoming a success this year, the president says.

Extra copies of The Ryan Leader have been printed, so that souvenir copies may be given each graduate from out of town
